Cowan F. “Bubba” Hyde was born on this date in Pontotoc,
Mississippi; 1908. Hyde was the exceptionally
speedy, long time outfielder for Negro League baseball’s Memphis Red Sox (1924,
1927, 1937 - 1950). Still in high school
during his early years with the Red Sox, he went to college and afterwards played
with other Negro League teams. However,
he returned to the Red Sox in 1937 and helped them win the Negro American
League pennant the next year. Hyde played
in the 1943 and 1946 East-West All Star Games.
When Negro league baseball declined, Hyde played in the minor leagues
until 1953; retiring at 45 years old.
